Here we are at the end of the first quarter. How’s it been for you? Have you done more PR and how has that gone? If your first response is “what PR?” then stop. You’ve probably done more than you think.
There is a common misconception that PR is just about making headlines, appearing in magazines and newspapers, getting seen on television and speaking on the radio but it is so more than that. As somebody once said, “everything you do or say is Public Relations.” Some things that you may have done in the first quarter that you didn’t realise are PR include:
· Written a blog.
· Produced and sent out a regular newsletter.
· Used social media to speak to clients and potential clients and customers.
· Created a podcast.
· Been a guest on a podcast.
· Featured as a guest on somebody else’s blog.
· Attended any networking.
· Taken part in a live on social media.
· Been the guest speaker at an event.
· Your business has been a sponsor (e.g. for the local football team)
So, now that you can see that PR isn’t all about media coverage, how do you feel about your first quarter. Where have you had the most PR success? Which of the things on the list have you done? Are there things on their that you want to take forward to quarter two?
Even as a PR professional I don’t do all the PR activities listed for my own business, so I would say do the ones that feel right and do well for your business. For me I love doing my newsletter and whilst I have considered creating a podcast, I don’t like the sound of my own voice (people what know me will struggle to believe this) but I do like being a guest on others. I like writing the blog as I find writing therapeutic and I love, love, love social media for engaging with people.
For me personally the next quarter is looking exciting as I have a few events in the pipeline and may actually try and get some media coverage for my own business. I’m sure that lots of business owners are the same in that the thing they do most for clients they don’t do for themselves, that is me with media coverage.
I hope this has been useful and has helped give you some ideas on what you can do in the next quarter to improve your PR. If you need any help, then there are a number of ways that we can work together.
